October 2012's Theme:
~AUTUMN~
1. Why Did You Pick This Particular Image Over The Others? This particular photograph turned out to be my favourite one in the series because it seems to capture the feel of autumn in a unique manner. Most of the images shown that portray the season of autumn are filled with bright, changing colours and dried up, crumbling, falling leaves. However, this photo is of a jack-o’-lantern, a hollowed out, carved pumpkin that was originally meant to ward off evil spirits. A factor that I really enjoy about this image is that it is two-toned and very contrasted. It is a rather detailed close-up that is not only seasonally appropriate, but also holiday orientated. It gives off a strong Halloween vibe, precisely what I wanted it to portray. I figured that the majority of photographs handed in by my fellow classmates would be of nature, so I decided to choose one that had a bit of a different twist.
2. How Did You Setup / Compose Your Photo?
In order to snap this photograph, I made sure I got very up close and personal with the jack-o’-lantern. I positioned the camera in such a way so that the candle could be seen from outside of the hollowed out pumpkin. I made sure to capture this at night because it allowed for the type of lighting that I wanted. Snapping this photo after it got dark was a good idea because it let the beautiful candle light shine and reflect off of the pumpkin, giving it a natural, soft and glowing effect.
3. What Stands Out The Most When You First See It?
When I glance at this photograph, my eyes are first drawn to the glowing, fluorescent flame. I like how it has this effect on the viewer because the jack-o’-lantern’s jagged and rectangular teeth frame the candle flame perfectly. This photograph is intensely contrasted, so the first thing that stands out is all of the light shining from the inside of the jack-o’-lantern.
4. What Leads Your Eye Around From Place To Place?
The facial features that are deeply carved into the skin of the pumpkin each seem to lead the eye around from place to place. A typical person who is viewing this image will likely first examine the eyes, which may bring them to look at the nose, and then look down at the mouth.
5. What Title(s) Could You Give This Artwork?
Some titles that I would deem appropriate for this photograph are “Trick or Treat?”, "The Spooky Lantern" or "The Glowing Lantern”. These titles are each rather catchy and quite relatable to Halloween, which only happens once a year during the season of autumn. They are all potential great titles!
