“NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY”

1.   Why did you pick this particular photo?
I chose to upload this particular photograph because I feel that it portrays a cold, winter night highly effectively. The photograph is quite appealing looking due to the setup and the contrast. It is also asymmetrical which creates a vast amount of interest. In my opinion, this is the most visually appealing photograph that I managed to capture.

2.    How did you set up / compose your photo?
I stood in front of the garden which is in front of the porch. Then, I angled the camera upward, toward the subject. I made sure to keep the window in the center of the photo in order to create an asymmetrical effect. I chose to compose the photograph this way because I really appreciated how the seasonal snowflake lights reflect their light in the glass of the window. It captures the spirit of the holidays as well as a cold, winter night.

3.    What stands out the most when you first see it?
The bright snowflake lights are what stand out the most when I look at this photo. This is due to the fact that the background is so dark and highly contrasted, while the snowflake lights are shining bright and white. The white and black together are a harsh colour contrast. The snowflake lights are the main focal point in the photograph.

4.    What leads your eye around from place to place?
There are several different lines in the photograph which all help to lead the eye around from place to place. Two sets of lines can be found near the top of the photograph--where the panels on the white roof are and where the wooden frame goes across the top on a diagonal slant. Another set of lines is the bars on the railing. The final obvious set of lines is found on the curtains in the window. All of these sets of lines play the role of directing the viewer's eyes around from location to location.

5. What title(s) could you give this artwork?
Some appropriate titles for this artwork are, "Winter Porch", "Snowflakes in November", "Seasonal Veranda", "Reflection of Snowflakes", "Deck the Porch with Strings of Snowflakes", or "Front Porch in the Night Time". All of these titles relate quite well with the subject matter of the photograph.
